Accrington Stanley Ladies FC have joined forces with Accrington and Rossendale College to form the region's first Girls' Football Academy.

Successful applicants of the course, which is being sponsored by Puma and nutrition company Herbalife, sponsors of David Beckham's team LA Galaxy in America will win a place on a two-year full time course where they be able to study for a range of careers, from coaching to work in the health and fitness sector, or taken as a path into higher education.

Course leader Mark Fell said: "We're planning to run the course like a mini football club as much as we can and we're looking for girls with good technical ability, but, probably more importantly, the right attitude and commitment to sport."

The girls will have six hours a week of coaching from professional UEFA coaches, including a personalised training, physiotherapy and nutrition programme, and will play every Wednesday afternoon in a variety of leagues.

Stanley Ladies as an affiliated club will have the opportunity to regularly scout the academy when it starts, as will representatives from two American university organisations with a view to scholarships. Stanley Ladies Manager, Karen Fazackerley said: "Already several Stanley Ladies have been offered the opportunity for going for trials over the next few weeks and are hopeful of gaining a place on the course. We hope the academy will not only be

beneficial for the promotion of women's football here in Accrington but will also help Stanley Ladies in any future club expansion and development."

Stanley Ladies draw Preston North End in Cup
pne.gif Accrington Stanley Ladies, newcomers to the FA Lancashire County League Division 2 have been drawn against previous Cup Winners Preston North End in the Lancashire Cup. If Stanley Ladies can get a result against opponents over 4 Division's higher than them in the Women's Regional North West Premier Division it would be a phenomenal achievement in their first season.

Commercial Manager and Assistant Manager Karen Fazackerley commented:
"This is a dream cup-tie for us, Preston North End are well-known in women's football for having a great club running superbly alongside the men's team and something which we hope that Stanley Ladies can aspire to in the future. They also have a fantastic fanbase so it will create a great atmosphere for both sets of players come matchday."

Accrington Stanley Ladies will play Preston North End on Sunday 17th September at 2pm. Where the game is to be played is being decided over the next couple of weeks and when chosen will be added to the news section of this site.
